About

Eiga Files is the creation of Colleen Laird and Lindsay Nelson, two Japanese cinema scholars who wanted a forum for short essays, reviews, event calendars, and general information about contemporary Japanese cinema.

Our scope is wide-ranging, but given our particular interests and ongoing research projects we tend to focus on female film directors, independent cinema, and horror films.

Our goal is to inform and provoke discussions about the state of contemporary Japanese cinema in Japan and around the world. We also hope to provide up-to-date information about film festivals and screenings, DVD releases, and cinema-related events inside and outside Japan.

Colleen is based in Bellingham, Washington and can be reached at Lairdc@wwu.edu. To learn more about Colleen please check out her profile.

Lindsay is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science and Economics at Meiji University, where she teaches English, Japanese cinema, and Japanese popular culture. Her research interests include Japanese horror films and Japanese visual / popular culture. You can find her work in East Asian Journal of Popular Culture, Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema, and Japanese Studies. Her first book, Circulating Fear: Japanese Horror, Fractured Realities, and New Media, is forthcoming from Lexington Books in 2021. She can be reached at lindsayrebeccanelson@gmail.com.
